About Us

Coltherd Racing.
image Coltherd Racing came into being in 1999 - the year Selkirk farmer Stuart Coltherd (pictured) took out a permit to train his own horses. He gained his full trainer's licence in 2004. The operation is based at Clarilawmuir Farm, on the outskirts of Selkirk in the Scottish Borders. It is a dual purpose yard and boasts facilities for 26 race horses, catering for point-to-point, national hunt as well as flat racing. The yard is surrounded by some of the region's most picturesque scenery, with the horses benefiting from a healthy and caring environment.

Stuart's wife Lesley is joint partner in Coltherd Racing, while the couple's 21-year-old son Sam is a conditional jockey now based at Sue Smith's Craiglands Farm yard in Yorkshire. Sam has now ridden 60 winners in his career to date, and when allowed will still pilot horses for Coltherd Racing should owners so wish. Stuart & Lesley's elder daughter, Amy, helps out with stable and riding duties, while younger daughter Millie is still at school but already has a keen interest in the equestrian world and helps out at the yard.

Coltherd Racing's goal is to provide our owners and syndicate members with the best possible racing experience. The unique family atmosphere generated at the Clarilawmuir yard means each horse receives close, individual attention and the best of care, both on and off the track. We work closely with our clients to ensure they get the maximum return and enjoyment from having their horses at our yard.

In the past five seasons (from April 2015-April 2020), Stuart has chalked up a total of 57 wins from 556 outings (21 over hurdles and 36 in steeplechase handicaps), while his horses have been placed a total of 101 times. During this time, Coltherd Racing's horses have earned a total of £516,353 in prizemoney. The 2016/2017 racing season was Coltherd Racing's most successful yet, with the yard recording 18 victories.

Coltherd Racing offers a variety of racing packages, ranging from sole horse ownership to racing partnerships and syndicates. Stuart will be happy to discuss costs and give advice on which package would best suit clients' interests. So why not give Stuart a ring now on 07801 398 199.
